A strong start and a strong finish helped the Forest Lake girls basketball team win a pair of games last week.

Forest Lake, 3-0, defeated Hill-Murray 42-34 on Tuesday, Dec. 3, and then traveled to Duluth and took a 65-33 win over Denfeld on Saturday.

Forest Lake put the finishing touches on its win over the Pioneers by outscoring Hill-Murray 17-11 in the fourth quarter.

In the win over Denfeld, the Rangers scored 37 first-half points on its way to a 32-point romp over the Hunters.

Even though the wins kept Forest Lake perfect on the young season, Rangersí coach Jack Bender said things are going to get much harder so Forest Lake must get much better.

ìObviously, the wins help build confidence and the kids look like they have confidence,î Bender said. ìBut I donít think weíve played that strong of a schedule yet.

ìIím really convinced that we have to (get better) defensively, because we obviously have kids that can put the ball in the basket.î

Lindsey Anderson put the ball in the basket nearly every time she shot it in the two games.

The senior guard went 6 of 9 from the field and finished with 16 points against Hill-Murray. She then went 5 of 6 from the field on her way to 12 points against Denfeld.

ìI give Lindsey a lot of credit from an offensive standpoint,î Bender said. ìShe is very fluid with the basketball.î

Jenny Klingís ability to handle the defensive pressure of Hill-Murray was the decisive factor in the game, Bender said. Kling also finished with seven points.

Renee Frericks added 10 points against the Pioneers while Mary Sobiech had six and Christie Brink had three.

Frericks had a dominating performance against Denfeld. The freshman guard had 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Lindsey Anderson and Mary Sobiech each added 12 points while Brianna McMahon had nine points, four rebounds and three assists off the bench for the Rangers.
