Posted: 12/18/02 Depth propels Nordic team to first titleBerk Brown Forest Lakeís girls had just enough depth to win its first competition of the Nordic skiing season. The Rangers held off both Roseville and Hastings to take first place in the girls freestyle race at Troll Hollow in Dresser, WI, on Wednesday, Dec. 11. Forest Lake finished with a score of 42 while Roseville was just behind with 45.5 and Hastings was third with 51. Eight teams competed at the meet. Meanwhile, in the boys race, Hastings placed five skiers in the top 10 to win the team title with a score of 26. Roseville finished second with 42.5 and the Rangers were third with 55.5. In winning the girls title, Forest Lake got its expected performances from its top three skiers and got the kind of quality finishes it will need all season from its fourth and fifth skiers. Laura Edlund, a junior, tied Rosevilleís Rita White for first place with a time of 13:30. What clinched the team title for the Rangers was the placings by Nikki Duff and Becky Alexander. Duff placed 16th in a time of 15:48 while Alexander was right behind in 17th with a time of 15:50. In the boys race, Roseville stud Tim Damrow again showed he will be one of the top in the state this season by winning the individual title in the 4.5-kilometer race in 10:37. Dave Saunders of Hastings was second in 10:47. Forest Lakeís top finish came from Lorin Skoglund, who tied for fifth place in a time of 11:37. Peter Bailey was eighth in 12:05 for the Rangers while Ben Fick was 11th in 12:25. Forest Lake teammates Bill England and Ted Steiner tied for 15th, each finishing in a time of 13:15. |
