Posted: 12/18/02 Ranger recapBoys swimming Forest Lake finished seventh in the meet with 62 points. Last season, the Rangers finished seventh with just 16 points. The highlight of the meet for the Rangers, according to coach Dick Waskey, was the performance of the divers. The diving group of Brian Welch, Sam Chaussee and Ben Johnson finished second for the Rangers while the trio of Willie Walker, Mike Grothe and Dillion Huddala placed sixth, beating out the top diving teams from three other conference schools. Forest Lake also got a fourth-place finish from its 200 backstroke relay team and fifth-place finishes from its 200 butterfly relay team and 200 breaststroke relay team. The Rangersí 800 freestyle relay team placed sixth, as did its 400 freestyle relay and 400 individual medley relay teams. Forest Lake got seventh-place finishes from its 400 medley relay team and its 200 freestyle relay team. Gymnastics The Mustangs defeated the Rangers 127.2-126.95 on Thursday, Dec. 12. ìThe team performed much better and were still battling the deductions for leaps and jumps, but it was a much more focused and steady team,î Forest Lake coach Nancy Ellias said. ìThe score was very close...I was disappointed we didnít beat Mounds View, because we led all three events until the final varsity event on floor. ìOvershadowing this disappointment, though, was a feeling of encouragement at the improvement in the girlsí routines and scores and know that they really tried to come out on top.î Rachel Turry led the Rangers with a first-place finish on bars (8.95) and a third-place showing on beam (7.8). Bri Hubbard placed second on vault with a 9.0 and was third on beam with a 7.8. The Rangers also got third-place finishes from Jamie Essen on vault (8.95), Kelsey Callahan on bars (7.85) and Tasha Tyler on floor (7.9). Girls hockey On Tuesday, Dec. 10, Roseville defeated the Rangers 12-0. Boys hockey The Rangers beat Coon Rapids 3-2 in overtime on Saturday. Matt Stendahl and Clint Blum scored during regulation for the Rangers to put Forest Lake up 2-1. Coon Rapids, however, tied the game in the third period to force overtime. Once in overtime, Forest Lake got a shorthanded, unassisted goal by Stendahl at the 4:22 mark for the victory. Brett Sawyer had 26 saves in the win. On Tuesday, Dec. 10, Forest Lake defeated St. Francis 15-0. Stendahl and Mitch Hanson each had four goals for the Rangers, who had 64 shots on goal compared to 6 for the Saints. |
