Posted: 7/17/02 Fire destroys Hugo Legion PostCliff Buchan Hugo American Legion Post 620 was gutted by fire early Tuesday morning. Firefighters from Hugo and Centerville were called to Post 620, 5736 N. 147th St. when fire was reported inside the Legion. It was the second trip to the Post that day, said Phil Kamman, first vice commander. Kamman said firefighters were called to handle a grease fire in the kitchen at 5 p.m. on Monday. Later in the night, the fire rekindled, Kamman said. By 7 a.m. Tuesday, firefighters were still putting out hot spots and assessing the damage to the building. Kamman said he believed the fire started in the kitchen area. Kamman said the building was a total loss. A damage estimate was not available this week. But the Legion official said the club was fully insured and he expected the facility would be rebuilt. Hugo American Legion Post 620 was founded in 1947. Today the Legion Post has 127 members with an additional 80 members of the Hugo Auxiliary Unit 620 organization for women. |
