In 1991, he transferred to the Minnesota Army National Guard to accept a full time job as a supply sergeant at Headquarters Company, 682nd Engineer Batallion in Roseville. He transferred to the 84th Troop Command, also in Roseville, in 1992, and to his present unit in 1996.

He works full time there as a property book officer, ensuring military property belonging to the unit, and on loan to other unites, is ordered, received and accounted for.

As a military Master Fitness Trainer, he also administers physical fitness tests for the unit and helps soldiers prepare for the tests.

Janssen lives with his wife, Tracy, and their two children, Joshua, 17 and Samantha, 14 in Sunrise Township. His parents, Thomas and Evelyn, live in Fish Lake Township.
