Posted: 7/3/02 Mickey Mantle squad wins tournamentBranden Peterson Forest Lakeís Mickey Mantle team went 4-5 in competition between conference and tournament games last week. Last Thursday, June 27, Forest Lake travelled to Spring Lake Park, and squeaked out a 7-5 victory. Forest Lake pitcher Brian Welch got the win, and Carson Simpson struck out the side in the seventh inning to receive the save. Micah Thorson led the team with 3 RBIs, and hit a two-run game winning triple in the top of the seventh inning. Following the victory, the squad participated in the St. Michael-Albertville Tournament last weekend, June 28-30. Forest Lake scored at least six runs in every game, and became the Silver Division Champions. The team shutout Minneapolis South, 7-0, in their first game of the tournament. In their second game, Forest Lake fell to Andover 7-6 despite outstanding defensive plays by Chris Conley and Ross Miller. Brian Welch also went 3-3 with 2 RBIs. Forest Lake returned to their winning ways in their third game of the tournament with a 7-2 semi-final victory over St. Michael. Ross Miller pitched for Forest Lake, throwing a three-hitter with seven strikeouts. Paul Miron and Micah Thorson each had two RBIs. Paul Miron pitched a five-hitter in the championship game as Forest Lake beat Tri-City Red 11-3. Matt Lindstrom went 1-3, with 3 RBIs. The tournament victory improved the Mickey Mantleís squadís record to 11-6 on the season. |
