City plans homeland security academy

Forest Lake area residents will have an opportunity to experience the life of emergency personnel this fall.

The Forest Lake Public Safety Homeland Security Academy, scheduled for September 3-October 8, is an opportunity for residents to get a front row look at the day-to-day operations of the Forest Lake Police, Forest Lake Fire and North Ambulance departments.

ìIt is an opportunity to get exposed to public safety topics,î Sean Lafferty, an officer with the Forest Lake Police Department, said.

ìIt will give people an idea of a job as a first responder,î Lafferty added.

In a classroom setting, 6-9:30 p.m. Tuesday nights, students will be exposed to a variety of public safety topics.

Subjects include law enforcement, fire, EMS, emergency management, use of force/defensive tactics, D.A.R.E. and ride along.

There will be a new topic each week of the program. Beginning with a community overview, other topics include law enforcement, FLFD, North Ambulance, emergency management and defensive tactics.

Qualifications

All applicants must be at least 18-years-old. While residents of surrounding communities will be considered, Forest Lake residents will have first priority.

Individuals with felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions within the last year will not be considered.

Past police contacts may play a part in acceptance to the program. Background checks will be completed on all applicants.

Applications, accepted through July 22, are available at the Forest Lake Police Department, 210 N. Lake Street, Forest Lake between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
