Posted: 6/19/02 Johnson selected for All-Star tourneyRecent graduate Alex Johnson of the Forest Lake baseball team has been selected by area coaches to play in the 28th Annual Lions All-Star Baseball Tournament. Johnson is the only representative from Forest Lake. He will play for the Metro East Team when the event played this Friday and Saturday, June 21-22. Chaska Athletic Park in Chaska will host. The Minnesota High School Baseball Coaches Association chose the best players of the state, and divided them into four teams that are based geographically. Teams will represent northern Minnesota, southern Minnesota, the west metro, and the east metro. College and major league baseball representatives will be in attendance, as the all-star tournament players show their skills in attempts for college scholarships and other post-high school opportunities to continue playing ball. Former players include Terry Steinbach, Kent Hrbek, Tim Laudner and Jim Eisenreich. In all, 17 former participants later pursued careers in Major League Baseball. The tournament is sponsored by the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank and the Minnesota High School Baseball Coaches Association. All proceeds will benefit the Lions Childrenís Eye Clinic at the University of Minnesota. In 27 years, the tournament has raised $215,000 for the Childrenís Eye Clinic.
