Messiah Lutheran to help area youth

Grab those stinky and stained sneakers and burn some energy while supporting a growing cause.

Messiah Lutheran Church is hosting a 5K Run/Walk with all proceeds towards Forest Lake Community Services Youth Development Teen Center on Saturday, June 29.

Ideas for the teen center are coming together with plans to enter the Central Learning Facility, formerly Central Junior High School.

Kathy Bystrom is the school district youth development coordinator and has been working two years for a teen center in Forest Lake. She is thrilled Messiah Lutheran Church decided to help the cause sheís fought hard for.

ìIím very grateful,î she said. ìI really think this community needs to embrace this. Weíll be operating on a barebones budget, and itís so good to give kids a place to go during those crucial hours after school.

ìI hope other organizations will help us in the future as well.î

The event will begin at 9 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran on Highway 97, one mile east of Forest Lake Senior High School. The course will wind through residential streets north of the church.

Seven age categories will separate the field of participants, and all ages are invited.

All finishers will be eligible for door prizes, and a prize of $25 will be awarded to the first person to finish the race.

A family can participate for $15, and an individual for $8.
