Posted: 6/26/02 Celebration set to begin 5-day run July 3Independence Day is Forest Lakeís summer celebration special and it all begins here next week. A five day celebration will open Wednesday, July 3 and continue through Sunday, July 7. This yearís event marks the 78th annual Fourth of July salute sponsored by American Legion Post 225 and Auxiliary Unit 225.. Many of the major events will take place on Thursday, July 4. A parade featuring 200 units is set for 10 a.m., rain or shine. Best viewing spots can be found along W. Broadway Avenue and Lake St. (US-61) through the cityís downtown. A gigantic fireworks display over First Lake will cap the July 4th events. The fireworks will be shot at 10 p.m. Robert Flaherty, Forest Lake, past Post 225 commander and past state department commander in Minnesota, is the 2002 grand marshal. Honorary grand marshals are Ed and Joanne Cary, former owners of WLKX radio in Forest Lake. The Carys sold the radio station a little more than a year ago. Most details for the parade are in place, but as of late last week, the Legion and Legion Auxiliary were still in need of 15 convertibles to carry parade dignitaries. Anyone wishing to drive their open car in the parade on July 4 should call 651-982-0627 or 651-464-2600 for more information. The Legion Post at 355 W. Broadway Ave. will be celebration headquarters offering inside and outside food booths and entertainment. Bingo under the tent will be sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary Unit 225.
