Defending champion Amy Schmucker of Rocori bolted to an early three-stroke lead on the first day of competition at the 2002 Minnesota State High School League AA Girls Golf Championships.

Schmucker, a University of Michigan recruit, fired a 3-over-par 76 on Tuesday at Bunker HIlls. Samantha Braschler of Red Wing is in second with a 79 while two golfers are for third tied at 80.

Forest Lake junior Krista Swanson is one of three golfers tied for sixth at 83.

The final round of the tournament was Wednesday, but results were not available at deadline.

Swanson took first individually in the tournament with a 74 to earn the trip to state. Christie Brink and Laura Henry each shot a 91 for the Rangers while Trisha Thomsen had a 97 and freshman Sarah Berger wasn't far behind with a 98.
