American Legion Post 225 granted parking lot use for carnival site

For this year anyway, the Independence Day carnival will not have to move.

The carnival for the American Legionís 78th annual Fourth of July celebration will be at the municipal parking lot rather than near the Legionís Post 225, the Forest Lake City Council ruled at its last meeting, Tuesday, May 28.

Administrator Chip Robinson had suggested the carnival be at the Legion space, since the staff concluded East Broadway Avenue and the parking lot areas would not be ready to host the carnival this year.

However, Police Chief Dave Schwartz suggested otherwise.

ìI strongly recommend we leave it at Lakeside Park for this year,î Schwartz said. ìIf we have it by the Legion itís going to take a lot of concentration (of officers) to keep property owners down there happy.î

With the downtown corridor changing, the council questioned the future of the annual celebration.

ìTheyíre going to have to decide on a new site or decide on a new fundraiser or something,î said Councilman Tom Lynch.

This year, the carnival is scheduled for Wednesday, July 3 through Sunday, July 7 with a parade at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4.

Revenues from the carnival fund popular Independence Day activities here such as the fireworks display and parade.

Culvers

The council approved a certificate of design compliance for Culverís Restaurant, to be built on the Westline Center site on W. Broadway Avenue.

The 4,528 square foot building will be of beige brick with a blue roof and trim. It will share a driveway with Tires Plus, which is located just west of the proposed restaurant.

Meetings

The Forest Lake City Council regularly meets at 6:30 p.m. the second and fourth Monday of each month in the city council chambers.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 10.
