Forest Lakeís girls track team accomplished a rare feat last week as the Rangers placed second in two meets on the same day.

Forest Lake finished second to White Bear Lake by a mere 13 points at the Section 5AAA true team meet on Friday at White Bear Lake.

The Rangers then placed second in a ěpaper meetî which takes all the non-winning team performances from the AA section meets into account in determining an at-large berth to state. Forest Lake placed behind Coon Rapids in the ěpaper meet.î

While lamenting narrowly missing a state berth for the second consecutive year, Forest Lake coach Janet Howe said when you get the Rangers and White Bear Lake together, one good team simply isnít going to win.

ěThe kids worked so hard and tried so hard. Itís not like they didnít go out there and give it all they had, because they did,î Howe said. ěThatís all we can ask of them and weíre proud of what they did.

ěIt was just one quality team going against another and somebody has to be first and somebody has to be second.î

Forest Lake had its share of first and second-place finishes at the meet.

Stephanie Howe led the way by winning two events. She took first in the 1600 in 5:13.32 and in the 3200 in 11:40.02.

Ashley Wintheiser took first in the shot put for the Rangers with an effort of 38-1 and Laura Edlund won the 800 in 2:25.70.

Forest Lake also got second-place finishes from Ashley Bayer in the 100 high hurdles (16.99), Becky Schirmer in the 300 low hurdles (48.89), Samantha Haseltine in the 200 (27.17), Kristen Howe in the 3200 (12:03.27) and Beth Zienty in the pole vault (9-0). Forest Lake also got second placed finishes from its 4 x 100, 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relay teams.
