Posted: 5/1/02 McGruff House program growsWhen the McGruff House program was launched in Wyoming four years ago, six homes volunteered as safe house locations for kids who may be lost, are in trouble or simply need help. Sponsored by the Wyoming Police Department and the Partnership for a Violence-Free Wyoming, the McGruff House program has continued to expand. Today, 24 homes in Wyoming have joined the program. Most are in the city of Wyoming, but some Wyoming Township residents are taking part, said officer Brian Rod of the police department. Although program planners are pleased with the response, the need still exists for more, says Betty Hestekin of the Partnership for a Violence-Free Wyoming. Of particular need are McGruff House locations west of I-35 where none now exist. Any Wyoming area resident wishing to take part is asked to call Rod at the police department at 651-462-0577 for more information. The McGruff House program provides homes with a sign picturing the crime prevention dog. The sign is visibly displayed in a window. Kids who are lost, locked out of their home or simply in need of help in any emergency situation can turn to a McGruff House and know they will be safe, Hestekin said. The program was used at least twice last year, she said. |
