Linwood celebrates Family Fun Day

Name it and you could probably find it at the Linwood Family Fun Days last Saturday. This was truly a family affair, from working together in booths to enjoying the activities, and most attending managed to do some of both.

There were childrenís games, a dunk tank, farmerís market, public safety demonstrations, political information, silent auction, bake sale, craft fair, wild life exhibit, and, of course, food. Cold water was also a popular item, for the conditions were hot and muggy. Crowds tended to drift toward canopies, tents, inside the Senior Center or fire hall, seeking shade.

Volunteers from the Wildlife Science Center, scheduled to move soon to its new site on Sunrise Road, brought a kestrel, red-tailed hawk and a turkey vulture to publicize the center. Connexus Energy provided a lively demonstration about electricity safety, well received by the adults and children.

Forest Lake American Legion Post 225 color guard presented the colors.

A tradition at Linwood Days, Boy Scout Troop 435 sold brats and corn on the cob. Cub Scout Pack 435 sponsored the farmerís market, with contributions from Linwood residents of locally grown produce and perennials. Scouts also sponsored the dunk tank with the victims of accurate throws getting the better deal in the heat.

Firefighters sponsored a silent auction and brewed up their traditional booya which sold by the bowl, quart and gallon. The afternoon demonstration featured the Jaws of Life equipment.

Finally, a first annual Linwood Hall of Fame award was presented to long-time resident Marcella Zeches, for her contributions to the township. The award was initiated this year to recognize a resident who has made a significant impact on the community by volunteering time and talent. Zeches was selected from seven nominees, nominated by others in the community

Zeches is active in where she worships at Linwood Covenant Church, volunteers her time at the Senior Center, community food shelf, Linwood Helping Hand, and regularly drives for others in the community who need rides. Zeches was presented with a certificate recognizing her contributions.
