Soccer teams fall to Woodbury

Everything which seemingly could go wrong did go wrong for the Forest Lake girls soccer team against Woodbury.

First, it was the botched National Anthem tape. Then came the 15-minute delay in the game when the sprinklers came on and couldnít be shut off.

Frehsman defender Renee Frericks then had to pull a Brandi Chastain and change uniform tops on the sideline to replace an injured Jessica Meath in goal. Then there were the two Woodbury goals which led to a 2-0 loss to the Royals on Thursday, Aug. 29.

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, Forest Lake suffered a 3-2 loss to Roseville.

Although the Rangers have started the season 0-2, Forest Lake coach Jeny Hurd said she likes what she has seen from her team, especially since they didnít have any preseason scrimmages.

ìWe have things to work on,î Hurd said. ìYes, these are conference games, but theyíre kind of like preseason games to us. Weíre kind of behind schedule because we didnít get any preseason games.î

Woodbury, which was ranked in the preseason polls, got its first goal midway through the first half and added its second in the final minutes of the game.

In the loss to Roseville, Forest Lake got goals from Samantha Haseltine and Ashley Baier but was never able to lead in the game.

ï In Forest Lakeís loss to the Woodbury boys, it only took 36 seconds for the Rangers to go from hopeful to helpless.

Trailing 1-0, Forest Lakeís Sean Kennedy fed Pat Harnett, who worked his way around a Woodbury defender to the Royalsí goal, but his shot went just wide.

Just 36 seconds later Woodburyís Jim DiSalle beat Forest Lake keeper Sean Haymon as the Royals went ahead 2-0 on its way to a 4-1 victory.

That change of events made it hard for the Rangers the rest of the game, Forest Lake coach Randall Appleton said.

ìThat was a momentum killer,î he said. ìWhat it comes down to is when you play a good team like that and give them opportunities, theyíre going to score. Thatís the difference between them and us.î

Woodbury added two more goals in the final 10 minutes of the game to take a 4-0 lead before the Rangers scored their only goal of the game.

Junior midfielder Chris Conley twice missed on scoring opportunities in the final three minutes before converting ona scoring chance with just 17 seconds left to play.

ìThe kids are down four to nill and what do they have to play for,î Appleton said. ìThey get two or three great opportunities and knock one in. Thatís absolute classî

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, Forest Lake tied Roseville 1-1. Harnett had Forest Lakeís goal.
