Man arrested after chase with police

A man who led police on a chase through Chisago and Washington counties was arrested in Hugo late Friday night by Forest Lake police. A city squad car received $4000 in damage in a head-on collision on a rural road, Chief of Police David Schwartz said.

Aaron M. Teadt, 25, of Bethel, remains in the Washington County Jail in Stillwater where he had been charged with four felony crimes.

The incident began at 10:48 p.m. on Aug. 30 when city officers responded to a report from Wyoming police where a vehicle had been reported stolen. City officers were just south of the Chisago County line when they spotted the 1996 Dodge Caravan and gave chase on southbound I-35.

One attempt to stop the van near the I-35 Rest Area failed and the pursuit continued south on I-35 to TH-97 and then east and south over back roads, Schwartz.

Calls for help went out to the Minnesota State Patrol, Lino Lakes police and the Washington and Anoka sheriffís offices.

The van allegedly driven by Teadt by cornered west of US-61 on 180th St. N. where it turned south on Foxhill Ave. to avoid police. Foxhill is a dead-end, police said.

After turning around and heading north, the van collided head-on with a Forest Lake squad. The man fled on foot and was captured a short distance away by city officers. The officer who was in the car hit by the van was not injured.

Schwartz said Teadt is facing four felony counts: fleeing a police officer, obstruction of justice with force, motor vehicle theft and fifth degree possession of a controlled substance. He is also being charged with driving under the influence, police said.

Alcohol charges

Police in Forest Lake made several arrests involving alcohol during the past week.

Police were called to the construction zone on E. Broadway Ave. at 1:40 a.m. where a man was seen by police driving one of the Bobcats used on the job site.

Schwartz said police will charge Edward Potter, 24, of Forest Lake, with third degree driving while intoxicated. He was found in his car by police with the motor running.

Police received two citizen complaints from near the 1000 block of SE 12th Ave. in the early morning hours of Friday, Aug. 30.

One complaint was of noise and a jet ski on the bay at 3:15 a.m. The second was by a neighbor who reported someone knocking on her door around 3 a.m.

At 1007 SE 12th Ave., police located a party with juveniles present, Schwartz. The address is the home of Dennis C. Hegberg, county commissioner from Forest Lake.

Hegberg was not home at the time of the incident.

As a result of the investigation, five tickets were written for minors in consumption of alcohol. Police believe a number of other youth fled the scene as police arrived.

Schwartz said Nicholas P. Hegberg, 20, the son of the commissioner, faces a possible charge of furnishing alcohol to minors. The case has been referred to the city attorney for formal charging, Schwartz said.

Police are also investigating the theft of a privately owned golf cart. On Aug. 29 at 10:45 p.m., a Forest Lake resident who lives on Harrow Ave. reported the theft of the golf cart from the Lobster Shop and Castlewood Golf Course parking lot, 7050 Scandia Trail N. Personal belongings valued at $1000 were also taken, police said.
