Posted: 4/16/03 District plans extensive summer school programAn extension summer school program will be offered to students attending ISD 831 school this June and July. Detailed information on the various programs, including the schedule and locations, following with each program broken down by respective grade level. Elementary K-5 Summer time provides an excellent opportunity for students to receive additional instruction in the areas or reading, mathematics, and writing. These basic skills are essential for success in all academic areas. Receiving additional instruction during the summer will enable students to make further gains in the core academic areas. Students who make these gains during the summer will be more likely to be successful during the school year on MCA tests and on class material. The summer school instruction is aligned with the reading, math, and writing skills students are learning during the school year, through Title services, and through extended day services. The summer school program teaches and reinforces these skills in an innovative, interdisciplinary, and thematic way using curricular resources that are relevant and new to the students. Students in 6th grade will enroll in the transition summer school program at the high school. The 6th grade transition program will emphasize reading, writing, and math basic skills. Additionally, students will participate in activities and discussions related to the transition to the junior high school program. The transition program is thematic based with a specific emphasis on the development of basic academic skills. Dates: Monday, June 16th - Friday, July 11th. Days: Monday - Friday Number of school days: 19 School Day: 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Place: Forest View Elementary Junior High The junior high school program is designed for students who need to improve their math, reading, and writing skills. The summer school program provides an opportunity for students to further develop organizational and study skills that are essential for success at the secondary education level. Students who participate in the summer school program will improve their skills in the core academic areas of reading, mathematics, and writing. Summer school success will have a positive effect on studentsÇ success during the regular school year. Junior high math will be offered in a manner that will allow students to repeat the math they missed or failed during the school year or improve math basic skills. The reading and writing will be offered in a thematic, interdisciplinary manner that will enable students to improve reading and writing skills requisite for success at the next grade level. Dates: Monday, June 16th - Thursday, July 17th Days: Monday - Friday School Day: 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. High School The summer school program for grades 9 - 12 is designed to provide students the opportunity to make up credits and graduation standards they failed during the school year. Additionally, summer school must also meet the needs of students who need to prepare to re-take the reading, math, and writing Minnesota Basic Skills Test. Administrators and deans will determine the classes to be offered during summer school based on the needs that students have to make up credits and standards missed or failed during the school year.
