Former Gopher, Gold Medal coach Herb Brooks killed in crash near Forest Lake

Former University of Minnesota hockey coach Herb Brooks, 66, was killed in a single-car rollover just south of the split between Interstate 35W and Interstate 35E early Monday afternoon.

Brooks was most famous for being the head coach of the 1980 United States Olympic hockey team which won a Gold Medal with a performance many labeled Miracle on Ice. Brooks also coached the 2002 Olympic team to a silver medal in the Olympic Games at Salt Lake City, Utah.

The former hockey coach was driving a Toyota minivan that was involved in a rollover. Brooks was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
