Pick up a good attitude when shopping for school supplies

By Sami Grimes

On July 3rd, I was shopping for some last-minute Fourth of July decorations with my mom at Target.

For those who donít know, that holiday is considered the unofficial half-way mark of summer vacation.

Much to my surprise, the area that once took up lawn furniture and garden decorations was being taken down, and school supplies were being put on display.

School supplies in the middle of summer?

Thatís sort of cruel, donít you think? Then, Wal-Mart began their advertising as well. Pens, pencils and glue, oh my!

With that evidence presented, itís clear to see that school is definitely on its way. Yet, why is that considered such a bad thing?

I know my friends cringe whenever we drive by the high school, but I am sort of looking forward to school starting. Of course, I am not excited about the homework and the early morning get up, but letís look at all the great aspects of school, shall we?

First off, you get to see those people you only see during the school year.

I have so many friends that I never hear from in summer, and itís like a miniature reunion on that first day when you can hug them and catch up on those few lost months. Secondly, I cannot speak for everyone, but in the 80 and 90 degrees of a Forest Lake summer, you donít wear a jacket, much less the heavy leather of a lettermanís jacket. So, the cool, fall temperatures of September should allow us to wear them without sweating to death.

Another good reason to look forward to September, and the following school year, is the styles we can wear as well! So many cute jeans, sweaters, and long shirts in general are gracing the catalogs and mall stores this year, and it will be perfect weather for wearing them!

During summer, I know one thing many of us students experience is the feeling of being ìout of the loop,î especially when it comes to break-ups and new relationships.

No one wants the embarrassment of asking how someone and their girlfriend or boyfriend is when they have been broken up for two months! So, yet another good aspect of school starting is how fast information can be passed on.

Obviously, this is not so good when you donít want people to know certain things, however when itís great news, the word can be out by passing time via the notes and mouths of our peers.

So in this month of August, donít break out in tears when you receive your ìregistration dayî letter, and donít swear on your Sponge Bob Squarepants socks that youíre going to beat me up for praising school either. Just go with the flow of summer vacation, and then you can approach school with a good attitude and have an awesome school year!
