Posted: 8/27/03 Locals win county fair open eventsLocal residents dominated a number of open competition events during the 2003 Washington County Fair. Many awards in swine, poultry and goats were won by individuals from the north end of Washington County, according to information released by Eileen Tank, Washington County Fair Manager this week. In dairy goat competition Christine Maefsky, Scandia, won two grand champion honors and one reserve champion award. Carol Amundson, Scandia, claimed two grand champion and three reserve champion honors with goats. Sarah Maefsky, Scandia, had two reserve champion animals while Seth Maefsky, Scandia, had one grand champion goat and one reserve champion animal. In pygmy goat and other breed open competition, Gloria Splinter, Forest Lake, won the herdsmanship award and had two grand champion and two reserve champion goats in open competition. Roland Splinter, Forest Lake, took home one grand champion award and one reserve champion award in pygmy goat categories. In swine open competition, Kelvin Anderson was grand champion senior gilt and brother Vince Anderson was grand champion junior gilt. The Andersons keep their hogs in Hugo at the home of their grandparents, Helen and Byron Anderson. Blake Dunsmore, Forest Lake, was reserve champion barrow in the swine show. In poultry, Ron Knutson, Scandia, was grand champion. Vernette Karwoski, Scandia, was reserve champion. In rabbit competition, Blair Insley, Scandia, was grand champion. In the open class dairy show, Gary and Lester Rydeenís Boot Lake Farm in Marine was reserve champion in registered Holstein-Junior. Autumnwood Farm, Forest Lake, was honored with the herdsmanship award in the dairy cattle award. The farm is owned by Pat and Char Daninger and their four children: Luke, Erin, Nathan and Mariah. They brought a number of head of cattle to the Washington County Fair this summer. |
