Police seek identity of man who left lake after his snowmobile broke through ice

Police in Forest Lake are seeking the identity of a man who left the lake after his snowmobile broke through the ice last Friday.

City police were called to Third Lake by a citizen who saw a snowmobile break through and sink about 150 yards from Willow Point, said Sgt. Ron Hanegraaf. Police reports said the man crawled through the hole and was picked up by a second snowmobile. It was last seen traveling west, police said.

The snowmobile has not been recovered and police want to know the identity of the man, Hanegraaf said. Reports that the man went to the Willows Restaurant were not correct, the officer said.

The breakthrough was reported to police at 3:56 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5. Forest Lake Fire and Rescue was dispatched to the scene with its rescue boat, but cancelled en route.

Hanegraaf said the incident is a reminder that ice conditions are not yet safe and when incidents such as this one happen, people should not leave the scene. The snowmobile rider is responsible for removing the machine from the lake, he said.
