Homestead deadline is Dec. 15
Property owners or qualified relatives of property owners must contact your county assessor to file a homestead application on or before Monday, Dec. 15, if one of the following applies: If you are a property owner or qualifying relative of the property owner and you have changed residences during the past year and are using the property for homestead purposes; or if you are a property owner or qualifying relative of the property owner and the use of the property has changed during the past year: you are now using the property for homestead purposes and the property was not receiving the homestead classification in the past. A qualifying relative for homestead purposes depends on the type of property. For residential property, a qualifying relative can be a parent, stepparent, child, stepchild, grandparent, grandchild, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew, or niece of the owner. This relationship may be by blood or marriage. For agricultural property, a qualifying relative can be a child, grandchild or parent of the owner or a child or grandchild of the spouse of the owner.
