Smith named to Workforce council

Terry Smith, a former Forest Lake City Council member, has been appointed to the Governorís Workforce Development Council. The council is composed of 32 individuals representing business, labor, education, the nonprofit sector, the Minnesota Legislature and others with an interest in Minnesotaís workforce system. The GWDC serves the governor and legislature by identifying solutions to specific economic and workforce development challenges so that Minnesota can grow and sustain the nation's best workforce. The GWDCís mission is to provide the necessary guidance to the workforce development system to develop the skills of the entire workforce of the state, and to ensure that skill development meets the needs of the stateís economy. The GWDC functions as the Workforce Investment Board under the federal Workforce Investment Act of 1998. Gov. Pawlenty expects the GWDC to play a role in bringing citizen involvement, engagement and oversight to workforce development efforts and to provide strategic leadership for workforce development and local/regional leaders. Smith, a member of Teamsters Union 638, was one of 10 recent appointees and represents labor.
