Bike trail plan in Chisago County takes big step
Plans for the first leg of the Swedish Immigrant Bike Trail are advancing in Chisago County. The Chisago County Board on Dec. 3 voted to proceed with property acquisition for the Swedish Immigrant Trail from Center City to Taylors Falls. The action will include an application for a federal transportation enhancement funding grant. ìIf the application for funding is successful, it will provide approximately 80 percent of funding for this portion of the Swedish Immigrant Trail,î said County Board Chair Ben Montzka. The county will explore other funding options for the local share of the project cost. The trail is part of the countyís comprehensive trail plan adopted in 1995. In includes connecting the countyís cities in both a north-south alignment and an east-west alignment. The trail will follow the former Northern Pacific rail right-of-way. It is anticipated to be an equestrian, bike, rollerblade and walking trail that will ultimately traverse from Taylors Falls to Wyoming where it will connect with the Sunrise Prairie Trail that runs from the south county line to North Branch.
