Staff WriterClark Quiring, the Forest Lake City Councilís choice for new police chief, said this week he is looking forward to making Forest Lake his new home.
Quiring, 50, and his wife, Sarah, were in Forest Lake over the Thanksgiving weekend to look at housing and acquaint themselves with the community they likely will call home next month.
He is working out details of negotiations with the Brimeyer Group, the search firm which led the nationwide search for a new chief, and expects an agreement to be complete within a week.
ìI think itís a great place, itís got a lot of potential,î Quiring said. ìI think itís a great opportunity. Iím hoping to relocate in early January.î
It could be said Quiring was baited for this job by an ice fishing contest.
He and an ice fishing buddy went to the Golden Rainbow Ice Fishing Contest here in 1997. The contest was contested that year and brouhaha ensued with allegations of cheating and fishy results.
ìI thought it was a pretty interesting area,î Quiring said. When he was contacted about a lead on a job in Forest Lake, he remembered the contest and took an interest.
Quiring, a native of Blue Earth, MN, was selected from a pool of 75 candidates to succeed Chief Dave Schwartz. He was one of five candidates interviewed for the position.
Quiring comes to Forest lake from Sioux Falls, S.D. where he is a police captain with the Sioux Falls Police Department. He has been with the Sioux Falls Police Department since 1979 and has served in various capacities including chief, as a SWAT team leader and in patrol, administrative and detective divisions there.
