Posted: 2/12/03 FL pulls 2-1 upset of White Bear LakeBerk Brown Carl Brandt has always maintained that his Forest Lake boys hockey team can skate with the best of them. The Rangers proved that Saturday night with a 2-1 victory over No. 7-ranked White Bear Lake at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood. The Rangers, 15-7-1, took a 1-0 lead at the 1:02 mark of the first period on a power-play goal by Phil Vandeveer and never trailed. Cory Minkeís goal at the 13:27 mark of the third period put Forest Lake ahead 2-0 and secured the victory for the Rangers. White Bear Lake, 18-5, got its only goal at the 14:59 mark of the final period. Brandt said the win over the Bears is proof his team can beat the best when it is playing at its best. ěThe main thing was that everything came together for us,î Brandt said. ěWe had great offensive flow all the way up and down the ice and we had good defensive coverage all the way from the offensive zone to the back-check and we had great goaltending. ěThatís the way we can play if everything is in right alignment for us.î The upset of the Bears also came just days after the Rangers suffered an upset itself at the hands of Mounds View. Mounds View downed the Rangers 3-2 in overtime despite Forest Lake getting nine shots on goal compared to just one for the Mustangs in the extra period. Jeff Stone and Clint Blum each had goals for the Rangers in the loss to Mounds View on Thursday, Feb. 6, at Maroon and Gold Arena. Brandt said he was impressed with the way his team rebounded against the Bears. Forest Lake, which has won six of its last seven games, also has positioned itself for a high seed in the upcoming section playoffs. Cloquet, which beat the Rangers earlier this year, and Forest Lake have the two best records of the Section 7AA teams. That should mean Forest Lake will host a quarterfinal playoff game on Tuesday, Feb. 18. Seedings for the tournament, however, will not be announced until Sunday, Feb. 16. |
