Ranger recap

Boys hockey
ď The Forest Lake boys hockey team recorded a pair of victories last week, one in Suburban East Conference play and the other in non-conference action.

The Rangers beat Brainerd 5-3 on Thursday, Jan. 2, and then took a 3-1 win over SEC foe Stillwater on Friday.

In the win over Brainerd, Cory Minke had two goals for the Rangers while Matt Stendahl, Scooter Brandt and Dan Guenther each had one. Brett Sawyer had 37 saves.

In the win over Stillwater, Forest Lake jumped to a 2-0 lead after one period thanks to goals from Mitch Hanson and Guenther. Stendahl added the third goal in the second period. Sawyer finished with 17 saves.

Boys basketball
ď North Branch limited the Forest Lake boys basketball team to 34-percent shooting (13 of 38) in taking a 46-36 victory over the Rangers on Friday.

Joey Ryan was the only Ranger in double figures with 13 points. He also added nine rebounds while Kevin Keto had seven points and Lance Overson had eight rebounds.

Gymnastics
ď Forest Lake finished in ninth place at the MGGOA Classic Gymnastics Meet on Saturday in Roseville.

Rachel Turry was the Rangersí top performer as she placed fourth on bars with a score of 8.95.
Bri Hubbard finished 14th on vault with an 8.85 while Jamie Essen was 18th with an 8.725. On beam, Turry placed 18th with an 8.025 and Hubbard was 20th with an 8.0.

Alpine ski
ď The Forest Lake boys and girls alpine ski teams recently split a dual against Mahtomedi.
The boys team took a 33-22 victory while Mahtomedi downed the Rangers 38-17 in the girls race.

Ryan Moen finished first for the Forest Lake boys while Jason Higgins was second, Mike Newell was fifth, Chris Muske was sixth and Brett Stolberg was eighth.
In the girls race, Amanda Connelly was third for the Rangers while Carly Bass was fourth and Kelly Haglund was ninth.

Girls hockey
ď The Forest Lake girls hockey team has won its last two games, which included its first win of the season in Suburban East Conference play.

Forest Lake started its winning streak with a 4-1 win over Morris/Benson in its final game of the Holiday Cup at Schwanís Super Rink in Blaine.

The Rangers then took a 2-1 win over Woodbury in an SEC game on Friday. Kathy Busch and Anna Johnson each had power-play goals for the Rangers while Kelsie Bakken had 18 saves in the victory.

Girls basketball
ď Mary Sobiech scored 13 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter, including a three-pointer with 1 second left in regulation to force overtime in the Rangersí 61-58 double-overtime victory over Centennial on Friday.

Forest Lake coach Jack Bender credited his teamís heart in overcoming a lack of size in the victory.

Lindsey Anderson finished with 18 points for the Rangers while Christie Brink added 10. Forest Lake improved to 7-4 with the victory.
