Nodd your head if you like bobble heads

Joe Drennan
Sports Editor

Taking an idea from Berk, I have chosen to occasionally write my own sports column about what ever is on my mind about sports on the local, collegiate, or national level.

I may write about something that is controversial in the sports world, or just about my views on the little things. Today though, I would like to start off with something fun...Bobble heads.

Friday the Twins had Eddie Guardado bobble head night and you better bet I was there. I went to the ball game to enjoy myself, but I wanted to go to Friday nightís game with the express intent on getting the bobble head.

Bobble head dollís (if they can be called dolls) are great. I have several on my desk, Sammy Sosa, Tony Amonte, Kerry Wood, Brian Urlacher, a Blackhawks Donald Duck, and Charlie Brown. Now good olí Eddie has joined the bunch.

What is not to love about these collectables. When I walk into my cubicle they are always there smiling at me. If I am skeptical of my writing they are always there to nod their head as if to say, ìitís all good.î

Now, I am not some sports geek who goes around trying to find all the rarest of rare bobble heads or plans on having so many of them I will have no room on my desk to work. No. I simply think they are a fun collectable for fans of all ages that take up little room.

I am not overly protective of my bobble heads either. This is evident if you look at my Sosa bobble head. Sammyís head no longer bobbles, no, he is neckless.

As the story goes, when I was still living in Chicago, I had Sammy on my TV stand, in arms reach of my then three-year-old niece. I heard her in the room, then a thud on the floor. As I opened my eyes I saw her standing by the TV stand with her back to me.

I asked my niece to move aside so I could see what happened. There Sammy was with his head on backward. My niece had pulled his head off as she played with him. Her only reply, ìit was an accident Uncle Jojo.î

So now I sit here, looking at my small collection of bobble heads and wonder who is next to join the group. Will it be Torii Hunter, George W., Manny Fernandez? I donít know.
