Awards ceremony recognizes seniorsí accomplishments

Forest Lake High School seniors were honored last week in the 18th annual Academic Awards Ceremony for Forest Lake Area High School.

Parents, students, relatives, staff and community members can joined in recognizing and celebrating the outstanding achievements and awards bestowed to many of the members of the Forest Lake class of 2003. The program this evening is in seven parts:

The Presidentís Education Awards Program has been established to encourage students to do their best in their academic studies. This award is sponsored by the U. S. Department of Education in partnership with the National Association of Elementary School Principals and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The Program has honored deserving students for their hard work and academic success since 1983. The following students will receive the 2003 Presidentís Award for Educational Excellence.

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP COMMENDATIONS

Two seniors are Commended Students in the 2003 National Merit Scholarship Program for their performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test. More than one million students nationwide entered the National Merit Scholarship Program. Fifty-five thousand students are being honored for their outstanding performance and academic promise.

Birchwood Senior Living, providing over 39 years of skilled nursing service through Birchwood Health Care Center, awards this scholarship to a student pursuing a career in nursing who has demonstrated academic and civic excellence.

CHRISTIAN PUPPET REVIVAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Christian Puppet Revival is an outreach ministry of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wyoming, Minnesota. The puppet team is comprised of 18 youth, 4th grade through high school and 14 adults. This scholarship is awarded to those students who have been active in Christian Puppet Revival throughout their senior year. It is presented to those graduates in recognition of their commitment to this ministry.

The Community Scholarship Foundation is a reality made possible by the generous donations of businesses, organizations, and individuals who work and/or reside in the Forest Lake School District. This is the 30th year for the Community Scholarship Foundation, and this year they will award over $40,000 in scholarships to Forest Lake Area High School graduating seniors and residents of our community. The Community Scholarship Foundation was established for the sole purpose of assisting individuals who are planning on attending a university or technical college. RICK DOYLE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Rick lived in Stacy for almost all of his life. He attended North Branch schools from Kindergarten until he graduated in 1987. He worked hard in high school because he knew it would be the groundwork for college. He excelled in Math and Art. He also played Varsity football. He attended Lakewood Community College and graduated with an Associated of Arts Degree in 1990. Rick was killed during an armed robbery in Stacy, Minnesota on December 6, 1994. Every year in his honor, there is a golf tournament. The proceeds from this tournament fund the scholarship.

ERA MUSKE COMPANY COMMUNITY SUPPORT SCHOLARSHIP.

The Real Estate Agents of ERA Muske Company give back to the communities in which they serve by contributing a portion of each commission check to the ERA Community Support Program. The agent committee donates time, materials, gifts, and money to our communities. The committee has awarded this scholarship to a high school senior who has demonstrated this same personal involvement in ìGiving backî to the community.

FAIRVIEW LAKES REGIONAL AUXILIARY LEAH HILLESHEIM SCHOLARSHIP

These scholarships are given by the Fairview Lakes Regional Auxiliary in honor of former administrator, Leah Hillesheim, of the former District Memorial Hospital in Forest Lake.

FFA SANDAGER HONORARIUM AGRICULTURAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Sandager Agricultural Scholarship is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated leadership in the Forest Lake FFA, his/her school and community and has chosen to pursue a career in agriculture.

FOREST LAKE AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY PAST PRESIDENTíS PARLEY SCHOLARSHIP

The Forest Lake American Legion Post Auxiliary offers two $250 scholarships to deserving seniors. The scholarship winners of this award may attend a college or technical college of their choice.

FOREST LAKE AREA ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (FLAAA)

Forest Lake Area Athletic Association is proud to award these scholarships tonight. The Scholarship Committee bases its selection on athletic and academic achievement, and school and community involvement. Scholarships are given to athletes who are planning on attending a college or university.

FOREST LAKE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

The Forest Lake Hockey Association awarded two $500 scholarships. These awards recognize academic achievement, while participating in at least four years of hockey in the Forest Lake Hockey Association and/or Forest Lake Area High School hockey program.

FOREST LAKE HOOP CLUB

The Forest Lake HOOP Club is a local non-profit organization that directs the traveling basketball program for boys and girls in 5th ñ 9th grade who reside in the Forest Lake Area school district. These awards are offered in memory of one of their past members, Terry Boeck, who passed away in 2000 due to cancer. This year the hoop club presented three scholarships of $250 each to:

FOREST LAKE LIONS COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP

The Forest Lake Lions Community Service Scholarship encourages members of our community to be involved in fulfilling community services. These scholarships are awarded to those students who exemplify the spirit of Lionism through their actions. This service can be through an organization or by individual efforts to help our community and/or its individual members.

FOREST LAKE MASONIC LODGE SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is open to seniors who plan to attend a college or technical college.

Applicants are judged on citizenship, leadership, loyalty, academic promise and participation in school and community activities. The Forest Lake Masonic Lodge is awarding two $700 scholarships.

FOREST LAKE ROTARY CLUB SENIOR STRIVE SCHOLARSHIP

The Forest Lake Rotary Club awarded three scholarships to graduating seniors. To be eligible for this scholarship, a senior must demonstrate the greatest improvement in cumulative GPA from the end of the first semester of the junior year through the end of the third term of the senior year, and complete 15 hours of community involvement.

FOREST LAKE SAFETY CAMP SCHOLARSHIP

Forest Lake Safety Camp was formed in 1995 following a tragic car/bike accident involving a Forest Lake student. Recognizing a need for improving safety for our youth, and through the generous and ongoing support of the Forest Lake area business community, the Safety Camp Scholarship fund was founded. These two scholarships are presented to two students who have demonstrated extraordinary service above self, their community, state, and families, and wish to pursue careers in areas of safety or ongoing service occupations.

The Lino Lakes Lioness Club offers one $250 scholarship to a graduating senior who is a resident of Lino Lakes. The scholarship may be used for educational expenses at a college or technical college.

LINO LAKES LIONS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

The Lino Lakes Lions Club is awarding one $1,000 Raymond Johnson Scholarship and one $1,000 Lino Lakes Lion Award. Each of these seniors from Forest Lake Area High School are residents of Lino Lakes. The scholarship awards can be used to pay for educational expenses at a college or technical college.

HELPING HAND CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

These scholarships are awarded to seniors who have achieved academic success and have been very active in school and Linwood community activities.

D.J. MOREHEAD ATHLETIC AND ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is given in memory of D.J. Morehead, a graduate of Forest Lake High School. This $500 scholarship is awarded to a Forest Lake High School graduating senior who has participated in football, basketball or baseball. This award is to be used to further their education at a college or technical college.

QUAD AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SCHOLARSHIP

The Quad Area Chamber of Commerce presented their $250 scholarship to

Nicole Albee.

SCANDIA-MARINE LIONS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

The Scandia-Marine Lions Club awarded a $1,000 scholarship and a $500 Scandia Marine Lions at Large Scholarship to seniors who attended Scandia Elementary School, and reside in the Scandia-Marine community. These scholarships are awarded to two seniors who have excelled in academic studies, and have provided leadership and involvement in school and community activities.

Kristine Chandler - $500

KRISTI SCHALLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Kristi Schally who was a member of the class of 1998 and was tragically killed in a car accident. These scholarships are being awarded to six seniors who have participated in school, athletic, and community activities. These seniors are givers not takers, and symbolize Kristiís personality and attitude. With this in mind, we are pleased to present this scholarship to these six deserving seniors of the class of 2003.

The winners of these $500 scholarships are:

Amanda Gage, Tyler Gage, Krystle Dettmer, Rachel Myrick, Joshua Peterson, Bryant Ross.

JOHN SCHUMACHER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The John Schumacher Memorial Scholarship awards $300 in memory of John Schumacher, who was a teacher for 26 years, and coached baseball, basketball, football and track in the Forest Lake District. This scholarship is awarded to a Forest Lake Senior who has demonstrated excellence as a citizen-athlete and will be furthering his/her education after graduation.

This year, Mary Schumacher has chosen one worthy recipient.

ST. PETERíS ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP

St. Peterís Home and School Association would recognize these two deserving seniors with $500 scholarships. These seniors were selected based on their achievements and growth reflecting the values instilled while attending St. Peterís Catholic Grade School.

SUPPORT OUR FINE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP

The student who receives this scholarship has shown superior involvement and dedication to the fine arts, demonstrated a good work ethic, respect for other students involved in the fine arts, and the desire to learn more and improve his/her talent while in high school. He/she must also plan to use the scholarship money for the continuation of education in the fine arts at a post secondary educational institute.

The winner of this $500 scholarship is:

STEPHEN TAYLOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP-LINO LAKES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The Stephen Taylor Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Forest Lake Area High School senior who attended Lino Lakes Elementary School. It is intended to recognize students who have demonstrated academic excellence, community involvement and who aspire to defined goals through higher education. This scholarship is presented in memory of Stephen Taylor who was a student at Lino Lakes Elementary. Stephenís love of life was an inspiration to all who met him. At this time, we are proud to award this $500 scholarship to a deserving senior.

TOZER FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

The Tozer Foundation Scholarship provides financial assistance to graduating seniors and students already attending colleges and universities throughout the United States. Applicants for this scholarship must be a resident of Pine, Kanabec, or Washington Counties. Scholarship applicants needed to excel in their academic studies, take challenging courses in high school, and be active in school and community activities.

The following seniors will receive $2,400 scholarships, renewable for four years, to assist with their educational expenses.

WYOMING LIONS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

The Wyoming Lions Club is pleased to award two $250 scholarships. Requirements for this scholarship include that students live in the City of Wyoming or Wyoming Township, have demonstrated community and school involvement and have excelled in their high school studies.

WYOMING PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

One post-secondary scholarship of $500 will be awarded annually to a graduating senior who previously attended Wyoming Elementary School. This scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic excellence and community and high school involvement.

The winner of the Wyoming Parent Teacher Association Scholarship is:

PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARD

The Perfect Attendance Award is presented this year to two seniors who have not missed any school during their 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. The Forest Lake Area High School teaching staff would like to congratulate these students and their parents for their accomplishments.
