Posted: 6/11/03 Golf outing June 23 will raise funds for YSBJim Trudeau was a key player in 1976 when the formative steps were taken to form what was then the Forest Lake Youth Service Bureau. Trudeau, as the chief of police in Forest Lake and later the Washington County Sheriff, saw much value in programs that help keep kids out of trouble. Some 26 years since the inception of the YSB in 1977, Trudeau is stepping up once again to help the bureau as it faces a financial crush. Some $86,000 in funding cuts have hit the YSB this year and that amount and more are expected in 2004. On Monday, June 23, Trudeau and friends in Forest Lake will sponsor the first Forest Lake Invitational with 100 percent of the proceeds benefitting the Youth Service Bureau operations in Forest Lake and North Branch. Fifteen of the 18 five-person teams have been filled for the nine-hole scramble event that goes off at 1 p.m. at Castlewood Golf Course, Forest Lake. Anyone interested in playing in the event should register their name or team soon by calling Mike Olson, Castlewood superintendent, at 651-464-6233. While the golfing card is fast filling up, Trudeau says the tournament is still looking for business and civic organization sponsorship. Wal-Mart and Mainstreet Bank in Forest Lake, and Reinhart Food Service, a restaurant food distributor in the area, are major business sponsors for the golf tournament. Any business or organization in Forest Lake and North Branch areas wishing to sponsor a hole or help with the event should call Trudeau at 651-982-2815 for more information. The June 23 event is patterned after the Trudeau golf tournaments that became an annual summer event in Forest Lake during his tenure as sheriff. ìWe hope to raise at least $3000 from this event and hopefully more,î Trudeau said. The cost of the tournament is $60 per person or $300 for a five-person team. The entry includes nine holes of golf, two power carts and an outdoor pig roast with entertainment. Prizes include cash and trophies of $500 and $400 for the top two team places, three $100 on course events and a hole-in-one contest on No. 9 at Castlewood. Forest Lake Chrysler is offering a car should some contestant score an ace in this contest. Raffles will also be offered for many prizes Dinner tickets at $20 will be available for anyone who cannot golf that day but would like to attend the event. For dinner reservations, call Jim Paar at The Lobster Shop, 651-464-8435. All checks should be payable to the Youth Service Bureau. Paar, Olson, former Castlewood operator Ron Vannelli and Trudeau are the main organizers of this event to raise money for the YSB. |
