The Mortenson/Fairview medical office building plat on the hospital campus was unanimously approved by Wyoming City Council Monday evening, as were the site and building plans.

Council action followed a planning commission recommendation for approval of the plat and development agreement.

City Attorney Tom Miller reviewed material for council members, including negotiations for a medical center, adjacent to the existing Fairview Lakes Medical Center.

Miller said the letter of intent is on file and the development agreement is nearly in final form. His position was one of recommending plat and development agreement.

Tom Lander, representing Mortenson Construction, presented plans for the site and explained how construction would proceed.

About 50 parking spaces will be lost during the project, but when the work is completed, 116 will have been created, he said. A few trees lining the circular drive will be lost, but most will be left standing.

Council concerns about safety regarding the linear accelerator were addressed. The physicist working with Mortenson met with the planning and zoning committee.

The radiation used for cancer treatment is generated electrically. The environment is safe during construction, operation, and even if the building must later be dismantled. The process does not irradiate the enclosure.

In addition, operation of the facility must be licensed and supervised

The access easement on the south side must be recorded before the building construction begins. The building site is more than 1000 feet from the lake and the drainage plan is appropriate.

The new building will contain about 14,000 square feet of space. A formal ground breaking for the project took place last month.

June 2 Updates

By unanimous 5-0 vote at the June 2 meeting, council voted to reinstate the summer recreation program, with funds to come from the charitable gambling funds. Jennifer Hegsted presented the budget for the program in the amount of $2110.

The program has been changed from three days to two days and some hours have been adjusted. Programs at some parks have been combined.

Wyoming Township supports the program and is contributing half the cost to make it possible.

Approval is contingent on securing transportation for participants for local field trips. Council authorized the release of $1055 in city funds, once transportation arrangements are final.

By a unanimous vote council adopted the wetland conservation act and re-established local government unit status for the city. This will allow the city to take back the function of determining wetland status for property owners by dealing with consultants.
