Greyhounds edge Forest Lake for section tennis title

All season long, the Forest Lake boys tennis team had been able to come up with the big win when it needed one.
It didn't happen on Tuesday, May, 27, as Duluth East defeated the Rangers 5-2 in the Section 7AA championship in Hibbing.
The Greyhounds used dominating singles play to gain the advantage and close matches which had gone Forest Lake's way most of the season, this time went to the opponent.
Despite the loss, Forest Lake coach Greg Patchin said there was a lot to be poud and happy about. Especially the Rangers' 10-6 overal recored this season, which was the second-best mark in school history.
"This has been one of my favorite teams," Patchin said. "Almost every one of my seniors I kind of recrited when they were in my seventh-grade class. They were overachievers and finished with a great record. It was a pretty rewarding year."
Forest Lake advanced to the finals by beating Cloquet 7-0 earlier in the day in the semifinals. The Rangers reached the Final Four by recording a 4-3 win over North Branch the week before.
In the singles portion of the tournament, Forest Lake ran into tough draws, Patchin said.
Singles players Jeff Randall and Alec Franke were each eliminated in the quarterfinals. The doubles teams of Max Conrad and Tyler Anderson as well as Nick Frantzen and Luke Odegaard also suffered early defeats.
