Posted: 3/12/03 Scandia-Marine Lions will have Liberty Day programLiberty Day will be celebrated at by students from three schools at Scandia Elementary Elementary School. The event is sponsored by the Scandia-Marine Lions Club and is a special day of recognition for James Madison, the fourth president of the United States who was born on March 16, 1751. Guest speaker for the 1:30 p.m. program is Sixth District Congressman Mark Kennedy. Scandia students in grades five and six will be joined by fellow students from Marine and Withrow elementary school for the one-hour program, said Marilyn Opp, principal. During his visit, Kennedy will present each student with a 50-page Liberty Day booklet. The booklet contains both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. Prior to serving as president from 1809 to 1817, Madison helped write the Virginia Plan which was the basis for the creation of the U.S. Constitution. As a member of the first Congress, Madison introduced the Bill of Rights to the House of Representatives in 1789. He was Secretary of State under President Thomas Jefferson from 1801 to 1809. A number of area politicians, including New Scandia Town Board Chair Dennis Seefeldt will take part in the program next Monday. |
