Posted: 3/26/03 Masquerís sets audition datesJessica Foster Masquerís Theatre Company is preparing for its summer season. The first show of the season, ìSeven Brides for Seven Brothersî a musical adaptation of the popular MGM movie features with a large cast of about 30 talented men and women. Auditions to fill those roles are scheduled for 7-10 p.m. April 21 and 22 with call backs April 24 in the Forest Lake High School cafeteria. Those auditioning (16 and older) should come with a song prepared and wear comfortable clothing for dance. ìWe really need guys to try out,î said Deborah Wiersma, Masquerís president. ìItís a great way to meet women.î Adapted by Lawrence Kasha and David Landay, the play centers around Millie, a young bride living in the 1850s Oregon wilderness. Millieís plans to marry off her uncivilized brothers-in-law is foiled when the boys kidnap women to be their brides. The show will be directed by Masquerís newcomer Mike Nazzal, a frequent player/director with Lyric Arts in Anoka and a wealth of experience at various theaters including Lakeshore Players, Playhouse 15 and others. ìSeven Brides for Seven Brothersî will be presented the last two weekends in June. Other shows ìSeven Brides for Seven Brothersî will be followed by ìSherlock Holmesî a mystery classic set in England which involves the scandal incriminating letters, scandal and blackmail. The 27th season will end with ìThe King and I,î directed by Dave Seaburg. The musical intended for the whole family is set in 1862 Siam. When an English widow and her son travel to Asia to tutor the kingís children and wives, cultures and values are explored in this love story. Audition dates for these shows will be released at a later date. Childrenís Workshop In addition to the stage production, a big part of the Masquerís season is the childrenís workshop, sponsored by FLAAA. Masquerís will offer the camp for youth 6-18-years-old. The camp follows a tradition set by Masquerís years ago and was revived five years ago. Next year, the camp will be offered July 14-18 and July 21-25. Youth go through the audition process to help them understand what an audition entailsóand what makes for a good one. However, the audition does not have any weight in participationóall are welcome. The two week camp, led by Kathy Killion and Matt Johnasen, is offered for $50 per child and provides youth with a true theater experience. Youth audition, learn story telling and act it out, learn character development, are introduced to line memorization, make-up, costumes and singing. The camp is topped off with a play at the end.
