Rangers finish third at true team meet

It appears as though the Forest Lake boys track team is hitting its stride as the home stretch of the season approaches.

Forest Lake got personal-best performances at a clip of approximately 60 percent on Tuesday, May 6, as the Rangers finished third at the Section 5AAA true team meet at White Bear Lake.

Coach Paul Kendrick said while he was very pleased with the way the Rangers competed, he also knows there could be bigger and better things to come as the team prepares for the Suburban East Conference and Section 7AA meets yet this month.

ìWe had a solid meet,î Kendrick said. ìWe werenít perfect by any means, but we asked some kids to do some big doubles and they did very well.

ìFor us, that was probably the best meet to date this season as far as a total team effort.î

White Bear Lake was the team champion, scoring 670 points. North St. Paul followed with 596 and then Forest Lake finished with a score of 435, well ahead of Cretin-Derham Hall and Centennial, who each tied for fourth, and sixth-place Cambridge-Isanti.

Forest Lake rode its success in one event ñ the shot put ñÝand depth to take third.

It was in the shot put where freshman Derek Peterson took first place with an effort of 47-9, which broke the Forest Lake freshman record, which was set 10 years ago by former Gopher shot putter Mark Fahey.

Bryan Brodeur followed Petersonís performance with a second-place finish with a put of 47-3 1/2 and Pat VanBeckum was fifth at 44-4.

The shot put was the only event in which a Ranger finished in the top three.

Brodeur added a sixth-place finish in the discus (124-2) while Justin Okeson was sixth in the high jump (5-6).

Lorin Skoglund was sixth in the 400 for the Rangers (52.60) while Chris Clark was sixth in the 800 (2:05.53).

Junior John Fahnhorst pulled off an impressive double for the Rangers, placing fifth in the 3200 (10:44.86) and sixth in the 1600 (4:49.75).

Chad Bjorklund added a fourth-place finish in the 1600 in 4:46.17.

Kendrick said he would like to see the same ñÝand then more ñÝfrom the Rangers yet this year.
ìWe have several kids with the ability to run with the best runners in every meet,î Kendrick said. ìThey had to believe they can do it. Some are learning it and some are still afraid to step into it.î
