The Forest Lake High School music program are finishing off the year on a crescendo.

The upcoming spring concert, scheduled for 8 p.m. Monday, May 19 in the Forest Lake High School auditorium, is a milestone for the music department, said instrumental music teacher David Livermore.

The concert, which is the combined efforts of the choir and orchestra, is considered a milestone, he said because it is the first time the music department will perform the Mozart Requiem in its entirety.

58 minutes in length and the last known piece of music written my Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the piece is considered some of the best musical literature.

ìIt is considered one of the greatest pieces of music ever written,î Livermore said.

Though performed fairly regularly, it also is considered some of the most difficult music.

ìThis is the first time the orchestra has achieved the ability to play this,î Livermore said. ìWe started to play the piece two months ago. In the mean time, we had a concert, plenty of things to do.î

But the work is worthwhile, he said.

ìItís a difficult piece but itís definitely a teachable month,î Livermore said. ìWeíre pretty excited. This is a big deal. Theyíre all talented kids or they wouldnít be there.î

Difficult to play and difficult to sing. The choirs will be singing the piece in Latin.

In addition to the Requiem, the Sinfonia Orchestra will be playing a piece by Greek and Britain. Choral pieces in the concert include Salvation is Created, a Russian piece; Past Life Melodies, an Australian piece.

The concert is free.
