Posted: 5/21/03 Annual Caring Kids march is FridayA group of ìCaring Kidsî are planning a friendship march for acceptance, diversity and friendship Friday, May 23. The Caring Kids are a group of students from Southwest Junior High School who make a commitment to being chemically free. These students also help with positive projects in their school and community with activities such as showing new students around the school and working on chemical health week. This year, the group adopted Friendship as the focal point for a full week campaign in the Forest Lake community. Friendship week will encourage students to make new friends, while recognizing the old, through activities such as sitting at lunch with students from oneís former elementary school, selling friendship bracelets, a homeroom door decorating contest to encourage teamwork and cooperation and the Friendship March. The Caring Kids Friendship March on May 23 is the culmination of the weekís events and hard work of this group of dedicated students. To start off the events for the day, students will depart Southwest Junior High at 8 a.m. and walk to the Youth Service Bureau where they will partake in creating awareness posters and cheers to use in the march later that day. A press conference is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Youth Service Bureau, 244 N. Lake Street, Forest Lake. The Caring Kids will report on their perceptions of friendships, cliques and acceptance and how they hope to make a positive impact on others. The march will begin immediately following the press conference. Marchers will leave the Youth Service Bureau and proceed down Lake Street, take 11th Ave. to 12th Street and then continue to Southwest Junior High. The community is encouraged to support the efforts of the Caring Kids by attending the press conference or by joining the march, honking the horn when driving by or being a positive role model. For more information on the event, contact Carrie Dobie at the Youth Service Bureau by calling 651-464-3685 or Cindy Walker at Southwest Junior High by calling 651-982-8707. |
