Hough sparks upset of Roseville

Sam Hough did a little bit of everything in Forest Lakeís 1-0 upset of Roseville Wednesday, April 30.

As a pitcher, Hough allowed just four hits over seven innings while striking out four. At the plate, the Forest Lake junior had two hits and she also scored the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

And then Hough and the rest of her teammates celebrated their win over Roseville, which entered the game ranked in the Top 10 in AAA.

ěThey were even more excited (after the win over Roseville) than on Monday (in the teamís first win of the season against Park). We had people jumping up and down even though we tried to contain ourselves,î Forest Lake coach Sue Stennes-Rogness said. ěThey were very excited kids, and they deserved to be. They played a great game and they made it happen.î

With the score tied at 0-0, Hough led off the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single.

Mary Sobiech, the teamís clean-up hitter, then dropped a sacrifice bunt to get Hough to third. A ground out by Becky Colter got Hough to third with two outs.

Lindsey Lingl followed with a flyball to deep second base which Roseville could not field cleanly, allowing Hough to score the game-winning run.

Stennes-Rogness said she thinks the win symbolized the improvements made by her team this year.

ěPart of it is that we are developing confidence on the field and weíre developing a winning mind set,î she said. ěThatís a gradual process.î

On Thursday, May 1, Forest Lake suffered a 1-0 loss to Hastings. The Rangers got just two hits in the Suburban East Conference game.

The Forest Lake softball alumni game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, May 23, at the high school softball field.
