Laura Joachim is state champion in speech

Junior Laura Joachim lead a group of 13 Forest Lake Senior High students at the state speech tournament at Centennial High School recently.

Joachim became Forest Lakeís first state champion in six years when she took first place in the poetry portion of the competition.

Keri Donohoo, also a junior, and Maggie Anthony each placed seventh at the state competition in extemporaneous speaking and drama, respectively.

Other members of the Forest Lake team to take part in the state competition included: Julie Dolan, Jessica Bystrom, Steph Demars, Carrie Evenson, Charlie DeVore, Kesiah Kolbow, Caitlin Hull, Molly Becker, Katherine Kasl and Braeden Ashton.

To qualify for the state meet, competitors had to finish in the top three of their respective division at the section 7AA meet, which took place in St. Francis.

At the section meet, Forest Lake won the team title for the 22nd year in a row.

Individually, Forest Lake had five section champions.

Donohoo was first in extemporaneous speaking, Demars was first in prose, DeVore was first in extemporaneous speaking, Kolbow won in original oratory and Kasl was first in great speeches.

Forest Lake also recently had four individuals take part in the national qualifying speech tournament.

Evenson and Kolbow were each semifinalsts in prose and original oratory, respectively, while DeVore was sixth in extemporaneous speaking.

Stephen Anthony was second in humorous interpretation, which qualified him for the national meet in June in Atlanta, GA.
