County taxation hearing is Dec. 4
Washington County will conduct its mandated Truth-in-Taxation public hearing at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 4 in the County Government Center in Stillwater. The hearing will provide information on the countyís proposed budget for 2004 of $138,799,000. The budget is a reduction of $11.2 million from the 2003 budget. After losing $5.7 million in state aid and absorbing an additional $500,000 in mandated new costs from the state, the county board shaped the preliminary 2004 budget. The reduction in spending includes 50 fewer full-time equivalent employees. Under plans for 2004, the county will increase the property tax levy 5.9 percent to $63,042,625. The levy represents the taxes that property owners pay to the county. The additional property taxes are required to continue providing state mandated services in the county, said Molly OíRourke, deputy county administrator.
