Town board hears project updates

Alice Pickering
Linwood Area Reporter

Linwood supervisors last week learned the needed rights-of-way for Thames Street improvements have been negotiated. Town Attorney Gerald Randall told the board on Oct. 28 signatures of seven property owners are still needed.

He will be contacting property owners to obtain these. In a few instances, minor adjustments must be made in the compensation paid for the land. The board authorized Randall to move forward.

Engineer Craig Jochum will contact the owners of property near Hornsby where the township is attempting to complete culvert repairs.

Randall is also putting together a franchise contract for US Cable. Basically, there is an increase of one percent in the fee paid to the township. The township share of the profits is to be four percent.

Randall reported no response from the McBride family with regard to an order to clean up the yard at the home. He is in the process of getting a default judgment for the property. The township has the authority to take care of the clean-up, assessing the cost to the property.

Randall recommended getting estimates for the cleanup, as the task will require up-front money, with recovery of the cost to come from assessment.

Other complaints have come in to the township about junk in yards. Papers have been filed on property along Typo Creek Road. There is also a complaint about a property at 22847 West Martin Lake Road.

Other reports

Decisions related to the road and bridge commission included awarding snowplow bids for 2003-04 season to Danís Landscaping and Rick Keller to supplement township plowing, when snow fall is heavy.

As a reminder to residents, snowplows are dispatched when heavy snow is falling and usually at 5 a.m. when there has been an accumulation of snow overnight. Plowing has three phases: making streets passable, widening the path and final clean-up.

Residents are reminded not to park on streets during the winter.

Supervisors approved the purchase of adaptors for fire fighting tankers so the hoses can be attached more quickly. Approval is for a cost of up to $2000.

Linwood supervisors denied preliminary sketch plan presented by Carroll Broadbent with the provision that if he resubmits a plan within six months, the fee for review will be waived. There was dissent on the board about the better plan for streets into the area.

Ronald Schallyís request to build a garage closer to the front lot line than his house was approved by the board. However, supervisors tabled a decision on a similar request by Patrick and Elizabeth Hensley until they bring more information to the next meeting.

A variance request by Edwin Tyren to build an accessory building with 14-foot high side walls was denied because township ordinance allows buildings of this height without a variance request.

Supervisors tabled a decision on a resolution establishing permit fees and service charges to be collected for township services. The costs are to be fine-tuned but most of those proposed are in line with what it costs the township to provide information and services. More information will be available at the next meeting.
