Veteransí Day program will honor Korean vets

More than 100 Korean War veterans will receive special recognition during this yearís Veteranís Day program in Forest Lake next Tuesday at American Legion Post 225 Commander Ron Weiss said this week.

When members of American Legion Post 225 and VFW Post 4210 gather on Nov. 11, they will honor the 50th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

This yearís program will include a full dinner and program with music provided by the Forest Lake High School band and choir.

Dinner tickets must be obtained in advance at Post 225, 355 W. Broadway Ave., or Post 4210, 556 SW 12th St. First preference is being given to Korean veterans and their families.

Tickets for the general public are now available at the Legion and VFW, respectively.

The evening will open with social hour at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 6. The ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Guest speaker for the evening is Bob Ryan, a war correspondent during the Korean War and Vietnam War. He spent more than five decades as a broadcast journalist, including 23 years with KSTP radio and television in the Twin Cities.

Along with recognition of Korean veterans, the program will also honor those military personnel listed as missing in action and prisoners of war. Ray Elias, a former Stacy resident and POW during World War II, will be an honored guest.

Other special guests are Michael Neubarth, Legion Department Commander, and Char Guse, Veterans of Wars Department President.

Forest Lake Mayor Ray Daninger and many local Legion and VFW leaders will also attend.

Linwood program

Veterans from the area are also invited to Linwood Elementary School for a recognition program Nov. 11 led by the schoolís Grade 4 students.

The day will begin with a flag raising ceremony at 9:30 a.m. The program and reception for veterans will take place in the school cafeteria from 9:45-10:45 a.m.

Veterans from the area who would like to attend are asked to call the school at 651-982-1915 by Friday, Nov. 7.
