Posted: 10/15/03 FL food shelf needs a hand
While the Community Helping Hand received a recent boost of food from the Forest Lake Lions, organizers say the need remains. ìWeíre a non-profit food shelf,î said food shelf coordinator Terry Beach. ìWe really depend on the gracious donations of the community.î While the need may not be evident to all, Beach said the need for groceries and other items certainly exists in the community. ìThe shelves are really being used a lot,î said Beach, adding about 30 to 40 area families rely on the food shelf for their basic needs. And basic is the theme at the food shelf, as Beach said the foodstuffs such as milk, bread, eggs, meats, (the perishables purchased via cash donations) pasta, canned fruits and vegetables, tuna, macaroni and cheese, beans and Hamburger Helper are a hot commodity. Hygiene items such as laundry soap, toilet paper and body soaps, among other items also are given to families. ìWe try to give things families can make a meal with, things that can stretch,î Beach said. ìItís just stuff to make basic meals, hot dishes, kid food.î And itís nice for families to get the luxuries like cereal, fruit snacksókid food. ìItís the things you donít really get when you donít have the money.î Beach said there is not a slow or a busy season at the food shelf. As the need fluctuates, the food shelf tries to keep food on hand to keep families fed. ìThere is no pattern,î Beach said. ìIt really swings, as far as need.î Community Helping Hand food shelf is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday and donations can be dropped off those days. While the food shelf is not open, donations also can be dropped off on Saturdays and Thursdays. |
