Hegberg wins county primary, Hugunin 2nd

One from the north. One from the south. Thatís what remains for the Washington County Commissioner District One final on Nov. 2.

Incumbent Commissioner Dennis Hegberg of Forest Lake won Tuesdayís primary while Marc Hugunin, the former Grant City Council and Metro Council member. placed second. Both advance to the general election ballot on Nov. 2. Forest Lake Mayor Ray Daninger finished third in the race for the county board seat.

With 19 of the 19 precincts in the district reported late Tuesday night, Hegberg came away with 47 percent of the vote while Hugunin received 35 percent and Daninger 18 percent. Hegberg won the primary with 1226 votes compared to Huguninís 929 and Daningerís 482 votes.

Hegberg, banking on his 14 years experience and name recognition, ran strong in the Forest Lake area, winning all five city precincts. Hegberg piled up 586 votes in the Forest Lake precincts for just under half of his District One showing. Daninger received 232 votes in his home precincts while Hugunin collected 114 votes. A 9 percent voter turnout was recorded in Forest Lake.

Hegberg also carried two of the four Hugo precincts, Dellwood, Pine Springs, Willernie, the small White Bear Lake precinct and one of two Mahtomedi precincts. Hugunin carried his home Grant precinct with a solid 228 votes to Hegbergís 134. Hugunin also carried Scandia (160-117), Marine (88-29), one Hugo precinct, one Mahtomedi precinct and Birchwood.
