Forest Lake High School girls swimming coach Rochelle McKenzie was quite pleased with the teamís sixth place finish at the Suburban East Conference relays last Thursday. The team finished with 66 points behind first place Stillwater who had 150 points, Woodbury (116), Mounds View (94), Hastings (84) and White Bear Lake (76).

McKenzie was pleased because her swimmers worked hard in the first meet of the year and confirmed some of her suspicions about this yearís team.

ìIt was a really good meet,î MeKenzie said. ìThere were some things I was happy about and some that I wasnít, but we had a couple section qualifiers and thatís huge to have at the first meet.î

Both junior Allison Garrity and freshman Mary Walters qualified for the 100-yard backstroke while sophomore Cassie Gerlach qualified for the 50-yard freestyle.

ìThe girls pretty much exceeded my expectations I had for this meet,î McKenzie said. ìI brought seventh grader Anne Bleninger with when I usually only bring half the varsity team and the poor thing was so nervous. She swam in the 200-yard fly relay and she did fantastic.î

The strong finishes in the backstroke confirmed McKenzieís preseason thoughts that her team would be strong in that event, but she also believes the butterfly will be another strong event for the Rangers as the season progresses.

ìI think weíre going to be stronger than I first thought,î McKenzie said.

The Rangers host Park (Cottage Grove) tonight, Thursday, at the Southwest Junior High pool at 6 p.m.
ìIt would be a great dual meet win to beat Park (Cottage Grove),î McKenzie said. ìThe girls are pumped for it and theyíve been working hard in practice.î
