Environmental review of a proposal to expand and modify the Chisago Lakes Joint Sewage Treatment Facility is open for public comment through May 12. The Chisago Lakes Joint Sewage Treatment Commission is proposing to construct a new mechanical wastewater treatment facility that will replace the existing stabilization pond system. Currently, the commission provides wastewater treatment service for the cities of Chisago City, Lindstrom, Center City, and a portion of Chisago Lake Township in the South Center South Lindstrom Sanitary District.
After completion of the proposed facility, the cities of Wyoming and Stacy will join the commission and wastewater from those cities will also be treated at the facility. The treatment capacity will increase from 1.26 to 2.46 million gallons per day after expansion. The treated water will discharge into an unnamed tributary of the Sunrise River.
An environmental assessment worksheet prepared by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency describes potential impacts on land, water and air quality. Citizens can review and offer comments on the EAW during the 30-day comment period. The MPCA uses these comments to evaluate further the potential for significant environmental effects and to decide if an environmental impact statement (a more comprehensive environmental review) is needed.
Comments on this EAW should be submitted to the MPCA in writing by 4:30 p.m. May 12 to: Dana Vanderbosch, MPCA, 520 Lafayette Road North, St. Paul, MN 55155-4194, or by fax to (651) 296-7782.
