FL students test above average in reading, math, writing

The Minnesota Department of Education announced that students from the Forest Lake Area School District scored above the state average on the Basic Skills Tests in reading, math and writing.

Districtwide, 85 percent passed the reading test, 72 percent passed the math test, and 94 percent passed the writing test.

These results are above state averages, in which 81 percent of all Minnesota 8th graders passed the reading test, 71 percent passed the math test, and 91 percent of Minnesota 10th graders passed the writing test.

In ISD 831, 583 students took the Minnesota Basic Skills Tests in math, 581 in reading, and 603 in writing.

School results from Century Junior High School show that 84 percent passed the reading test and 74 percent passed the math test.

At Southwest Junior High School, 88 percent passed the reading test and 71 percent passed the math test.

At the Central Learning Center, 25 percent passed the reading test and 64 percent passed the math test.

ěTeachers and students in our schools have been working hard to improve their success on these tests,î said Superintendent Lynn Steenblock. ěThere is always room for improvement, and we will use data from our 2004 tests to adjust the way we teach basic skills in an attempt to improve our performance next year.î

The Basic Skills Tests in reading, math and writing are a ěsafety netî to make sure that no student graduates without learning the basic skills needed to live and work in todayís society. The tests are not part of the federal legislation entitled No Child Left Behind.

Students must pass the tests to be eligible to graduate from a Minnesota public high school. The reading and math tests are first given in 8th grade and the written composition test is first given in 10th grade.
