Posted: 4/21/04 Top boys golfer out with injury
Joe Drennan It was a bit of an up and down week for the Forest Lake boys golf team this week as they finished eighth in a 20 team tournament, then finished seventh in an eight team tournament. The Rangers began the week at the 18 hole Coon Rapids Invitational at Bunker Hills Golf Course. The foursome of Jacob Svenkenson, Noah Lawson, Brad Lange, and Mark Moberg finished with a combined score of 332. Anoka won the tournament with a score of 309. Svenkenson led the Rangers with a score of 79, followed by Lawsonís score of 83, Langeís 84, and Mobergís 86. Monday the Rangers didnít fair as well at North Oaks Golf Course in a Suburban East Conference tournament hosted by Mounds View. White Bear Lake won the tournament with a team score of 153, followed by Woodbury in second place with a score of 156 and Roseville in third with a 162. The Rangers finished one stroke ahead of host Mounds View for seventh place with a score of 177. Eric Larsen led the Rangers with a score of 42 and an eagle on the ninth hole. Lawsonís score of 45 was second best on the team followed by Dan Rice who shot a 45 in his first varsity round of golf. Moberg was the fourth Rangers golfer whose score was counted as he shot a 45 as well. Eighth grader Andrew Kelly shot a 52 in his first ever varsity round of golf, but his score was not counted towards the Rangers team score. Svenkenson had to drop out of the round after he injured himself swinging a golf club. ìYou never like to see anybody hurt and in golf it doesnít happen often,î Rangers head coach Roger Cheyne said, ìbut you start swinging a club and it can happen. Svenkenson has been our top golfer so itís tough when you canít use his score.î Senior Eric Nystedt of Woodbury was the medalist with a score of 33. Nystedt also had a double eagle on the ninth hole. In JV play, the team shot a 171. The team was led by Kyle Lewis who shot a 41, followed by Adam Svenkenson who had a 43, Chad Dermel who had a 43, and Ben Johnson who had a 44. ìWeíre probably going to make some switches,î Cheyne said. ìOur younger golfers are playing well right now and they deserve a chance.î The Rangers next tournament is the Forest Lake Invitational at Forest Hills Country Club Monday at 3:30 p.m. |
