Tennis team wins first match of season

The Forest Lake High School boys tennis team started the season off with a 5-2 victory over Blaine.
Luke Odegaard and Chris Sobiech won their singles matches. Sobiech won his match 6-1, 6-2. while Odegaard won his match winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.

ìOdegaardís double bagel at the number one spot was a surprise,î Forest Lake tennis coach Greg Patchin said.

Forest Lake swept the doubles play, winning all four matches. The tandem of Jessup Schiks and Matt Peterson won 7-6, 7-2, followed by Dan Cromwell and freshman Rob Gavanda who won 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. The tandem of Jeff Kohler and eighth grader Sam Steiner won 7-5, 6-4, while Keith Beise and Tom Kling finished things off with an exhibition 6-2, 7-6 victory.

ìIt was an excellent effort by our younger tennis players,î Patchin said.

Forest Lake faced Centennial last Thursday where they fell 7-0.

ìWe played well against one of the states top teams,î Patchin said.

Forest Lake hoped to bounce back against Chisago Lakes Friday, but Chisago proved to be a tough opponent as well. Sobiech was the lone Forest Lake winner as he won his match 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.

ìChisago Lakes has a senior laden team,î Patchin said. ìThis is one of the best teams they have had in years.î

Forest Lakeís next match is today, Thursday, at White Bear Lake at 4 p.m.
